The longest case of PMS on record!!

Geez erupt already, will ya?!?! All weekend, all week..."Volcano Watch '04!!" I'm bored now.... I'm mean, it's sort of exciting for awhile...But every burp and wheeze?!?!

I have to say the first time it blew in '80 was pretty exciting. My most vivid memory is a look on my family's face. My dad worked for the phone company and was on the emergency response team that was to be the first over there to set up communications. He had to have his bags packed for weeks and there was a plane on stand by at the airport to fly out when they got the word. And so one Sunday morning, our house was rocked by a boom and everyone started to scramble....Except me.

In a lot of ways, I haven't changed very much over the years. And the Sunday after a Saturday night, is one of those ways. (the Saturday nights are fewer and far between though, lol) When my parents heard the boom and felt the house shake their first thought was the garage had collapsed, and my room was over the garage. After my mom opened my bedroom door and didn't have to look down and find my bed on the garage floor, the phone rings. The mountain had erupted, dad needed to get to the airport. So as mom, dad and my brother scramble to get my dad ready, I'm blissfully unawares and sleeping off the effects of the night before. Until all the racket they're making wakes me up! I come storming out of my room and yell down the hall "what's going on, geez keep it down!". At which point all three of them turn around and give me a look like I have lost my mind. "what?!?" And my mother, with that look and that tone that I can honestly say I have become quite good at myself, sez..."Well Karrie, Mt St Helens has erupted and your father has gotten the call that he needs to go. Would you like to say goodbye, or just go back to bed....?" Now, I might have been humbled, but I am my mother's daughter and I caught the sneer from my brother! Daddy's girl gave big hugs and kisses and all was right in the world! (even if the world was still spinning a little and my head felt like it was going to erupt as bad as Mt St Helens!) Dad wasn't home for awhile and watching the news it was easy to see why, so much devastation!! The ash was so bad, he couldn't fly or drive home if he wanted too. Total "Day to night" stuff.

But now it's 24(!) years later, dad's retired and rolling around the country with mom in the RV. Just got a call from them in Ritzville, Wa. Saying they are on their way up here. I jokingly told them to stay away from the mountain, she's acting up again. And knowing my dad, he'd stop by and offer to help in that folksy, "well, I was here in '80...Tell ya what ya need to do...." kinda way I love so! Now my mom - Ah my mom - she knows I'm meeting up with all my girlies for one of those weekends, her reply "Planning on sleeping through this one too....?!?!" Grrrr - the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, I'll give her that one! *wink* which is why I love her so.

I'll be glad when they get here, I miss 'em......
